Seaweed Washashores are photographs of short-lived sculptures made from natural and not-so-natural materials that find their way onto sandy shores.
When creating Seaweed Washashores, I use only items I find on the current walk - no bringing along cool things found in other places or on other outings. I try not to have an idea in mind when I get to the beach, and instead I let the items and the moment inspire the outcome. After taking photos, I scatter all the parts, leaving some to feed or shelter some passing creature, to drift back into the sea, to become a treasure carried proudly in plastic pail. On occasion I take items back to where I found them. Sometimes that just seems right.
For me, Seaweed Washashores are about serendipity, coincidence, and impermanence.
They are practice and reminder to SHOW UP, to be fully present; ENGAGE FULLY, to draw on all that is within our reach; and then…to LET GO.
Although their physical existence is brief, their photographs are long lasting, and their message timeless.
