Iterative: The Journey
[it-er-a-tive; adj; involving repetition of a series of steps, actions, or operations producing outcomes successively closer to a desired result]
This piece began as a single photo of the boardwalk at Gray’s Beach in Yarmouthport on Cape Cod. Several years ago, I used the original photo to create what I call a KaleyedesCapetm – an original Cape Cod image repeated and reoriented but not fundamentally altered. For me, KaleyedesCapestm are about stability and change, the individual and interconnectedness, the little picture and the big. In essence, they are about balance – the balance between each of the parts of those pairings.
“Iterative: The Journey” includes the original image (“Boardwalk”) and three different iterations of the original: “Two Paths,” “Keep Going,” and “Choices, Choices, Choices.”
Viewed together, these images represent stages or iterations of a journey – life’s journey. The text behind the imagery reflects my experience on my own journey over the last five or so years: the stages through which I’ve moved, feelings I’ve encountered, thoughts I’ve had about “the journey” at large, and in many ways, about balance – seeking balance, finding balance, losing balance, mourning a lack of balance, striving for balance once again.
Not only is this piece is about balance in figurative way (being about life’s journey and life so often being described as a ‘balancing act,’ or a ‘good life’ as a ‘balanced life’), it’s also about balance more literally – balancing the written word with imagery, what’s visible with what’s not, and balancing objects in space (well, in this case, projecting objects outward to create the appearance of balancing in space).
“Iterative: The Journey” is dedicated to Susan C. – who has been an incredible coach and cheerleader, source of wisdom and compassion. Over the last many years, she’s helped me to stay the course – to keep showing up, stepping out, moving between spaciousness and focus, making choices, and most of all, she’s helped me to just keep going…even, and especially, when I didn’t think I could. To her, I am eternally grateful.
